Williamsburg, Brooklyn is perpetually hosting the Smorgasburg on Saturdays and the Brooklyn Flea on Sundays, and both are fine choices for seeking inspiration and eating well. However, the most inspired ideas often come from breaking that proverbial box, so this weekend* hit the galleries instead! (*many ‘burg galleries are open Friday-Sunday only. Know before you go!)
First stop: Rawson Project for Davina Semo's Before Shifting to the Blackness. Semo encourages you to do a loop around, taking note of your first impressions, and then pick up a checklist and look again with her titles in your head. This 36"x36" square of steel chain is called "I WATCH THE ONCOMING OF THE NEW THRUST AND DO NOT CLING TO IT AS IT SUBSIDES." Change your perspective?
Next visit This House of Glass by Reuben Negron at Like the Spice (Roebling & S 2nd). Negron’s watercolors are so richly detailed you will swear he’s working in another medium. His choice of such an unforgiving, hard-to-control process is especially poignant in the context of his deeply intimate subjects. Apparently he works with his models to resolve a conflict in their recent memory, and his paintings are peppered with remnants of their secrets. Now you know why the gallery’s called "Like the Spice." Things are about to get a little racy!
Down the block at The Front Room Emily Roz likewise explores vulnerability and natural desire. Roz's The Rutting Season is a collection of animal kingdom paintings that are simultaneously delicate and calm and violent and gruesome. The show seems to imply that in this beautiful world, survival is a seriously messy business. Well, I'm game! Are you?
Hope you haven't lost your appetite because you’re right near Roebling Tea Room, one of the best brunch options in town. Basically everything on the menu is good. When asked about the Potato Sandwich (egg, potato roll, mashed potato, onions, mustard, pickles, potato chips), my server said, “You should get it. It’s just a really beautiful plate.” It’s a delicious one, too!
