W 19th St - Absorb / Diffuse, When Dust Settles, Snobs Behind Ketchup

Seeing Absorb / Diffuse at The Kitchen is the perfect way to lift the gloom off of this rainy day. Sheathe your umbrella and cut through Chelsea Market, which offers a smorgasbord of lunch options. This weather has a very European vibe, so why not stop in Amy’s Bread for a few dinner rolls, then Ninth Street Espresso for a latte, and finally Lucy’s Whey for some artisanal cheese? Grab a bench and enjoy!
Now on to the galleries! The genius of Absorb / Diffuse is that it begins to affect you from the moment you enter the space. Jennie C. Jones presents her “Acoustic Paintings,” which are made largely from soundproofing materials, amid the din of a low frequency audio piece. Her work is meant to explore how we listen and how sound operates. The coolest part is how Jones uses a neon stripe of paint on the back of a piece to create a reflection on the wall that seems to make the entire painting buzz with the energy of the music. Pictures won’t do it justice. Go experience it for yourself!

Next, check out Chambers Fine Arts, where they encourage you to collect some dust. That is, they encourage you to collect the work of artist Su Zhiguang, who uses dust from locations around the world to create layered compositions on silk.  The resulting pieces make up When Dust Settles, a show of remarkably detailed, two-sided panels that explore the rich history of dust, from the book of Genesis to Man Ray's Dust Breeding.
Brush yourself off and head to Lombard Freid where the gallery has been infused with site-specific murals as well as sculpture, embroidery, shadow puppets and more. This is all the work of Eko Nugroho, a self-taught artist from Indonesia. Nugroho uses vibrant colors and alien beings to comment on the political climate in his hometown. Though the subject matter is heavy and complex, the mood throughout is playful and inventive. It’s a show that will make you think and make you smile.
